UFC On Ice

snv10744Michelle and I were given amazing tickets to the Coyotes hockey game last night. We were sitting in the Toyota Club section and were right behind the Coyotes bench. In addition to the great seats we had, we also were able enjoy an all you can eat buffet (including lamb).

I found myself constantly observing the legend himself, Mr. Wayne Gretsky, as he stood just a few feet from us. He was surprisingly mellow throughout the entire game.

Living up to its stereotype, we even got to see a fight break out. And I have to say, it is kind of odd to see how it plays out in person. Everyone else on the ice, refs included, stand around and wait for the fight to end or go to the ground before anybody intervenes. As Michelle put it, it’s kind of like UFC on Ice. I had a lot more fun than I expected and I also realized that hockey is one major sport that I really don’t understand.

That is stinkin’ hilarious because as saw the fight we all said the same exact comment, “This is like UFC on ice!” Then we started thinking about how it would be cool if there was an actual UFC on ice.

    I don’t understand hockey either.

And how was my leg of lamb?

    Oh you Arizona kids.

Hockey is a great sport, and is one of the best sports to watch live. The reason it is difficult for most people to understand is that they have never played it. The more you watch, it becomes easier to understand the rules and strategy. I love it! Glad you got to see the game, and the Toyota Club seats are awesome.

Jared – the lamb was great

Landon – the biggest thing that confused me was how they are constantly subbing in players in the middle of gameplay. I’m sure there is a method/system to it, but we definitely couldn’t figure it out.

You have finally experienced my absolute FAVORITE sport!! I LOVE HOCKEY!!! :) Sounds like you had a great time – glad to hear it. And like Landon said, the more you watch it, the more you understand. And it’s worth it to learn – hockey is a great sport!!!

UFC on Ice would be an amazing concept. I mean… first Disney on Ice, then UFC… there would be a puzzling mix of confetti and blood on the ice after that eventful night.

Lucky you!! : ) Glad you and Michelle had a fun time! I really enjoy hockey, and it’s true what Landon & Andrea said…the more you watch, the more you’ll get it. But I gotta tell ya the “Icing” rule still baffles me!!

As far as your confusion of constantly subbing in players in the middle of gameplay, I guess you’ve never skated while running, Jeremy! lol ; ) If you think about it, it’s pretty physically exhausting which is why player substitutions are frequent and do occur in the middle of a play.

And definitely check out this hockey flick, “Mystery, Alaska” http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0134618/ I think you and Michelle would enjoy it!

Hockey and fighting! gotta love it. “They go together like Lamb and Tunafish! Or spaghetti and meatball if you prefer?” -Thank you Rob Schneider!

Well I kind of stumbled onto this little convo and thought I could clear something up
Like what Romi said its about keeping fresh legs on the ice
Since its basically the same as lacrosse, you are able to sub in throughout the entire game whenever. Even during man up and man down situations
    Miss you guys!

Brian and I sat in the same seats! They are great! If you want to learn more about the sport ask Brian. He grew up as a “pond rat” and is a great hockey player! He should’ve gone pro! It’s not a good hockey game unless there’s a fight. That’s why I watch it.

I would pay money to see UFC on Ice

  11. Zach (28 Jan 2009, 16:54)

I concur with paying money to see UFC on ice, but Hockey’s subtleties are easy to miss. The rules are crazy. But it’s a great deal of fun to watch in HD as well. Go DUCKS!

    “Legs feed the wolf”

There are different methods to substitution. Each coach values a different substitution style – and you’ll notice that as games get more important (playoffs) sometimes the shifts get longer – especially for important players. Essentially as stated elsewhere in the replies, you are looking to keep as fresh of legs as possible. I actually think hockey players are in better shape than any other major sport athlete.

That’s true Landon, you never see fat hockey players. The only people I think are close are soccer players.

If they did UFC on ice, would they wear sparkly outfits and feathered hats?

  15. Denise Machovsky (29 Jan 2009, 22:08)

I absolutely love hockey,. It is my favorite sport! my team will be here on Jan 31st. With the fighting the refs typically wait until one player has the advantage and then they break up the fight and send both players to the penalty box. If you have any questions about the game I would be happy to share them with you and Michelle. The more you understand the game the more you will be able to enjoy it!
