Honor
Here’s your chance to help write the messages at Central each week as we employ open source sermon prep. In a little over a week, we’ll be continuing in our series, Famous Lost Words, and we’ll be teaching on “honor.”
So if you can take a moment, please leave a comment with any ideas you come up with concerning movie clips, quotes, scriptures, illustrations, stories, etc. for the topic of honor. The sky is the limit, so think creatively and share some of your genius.

Doesnt A Few Good Men have a courtroom scene where Jack says something like. We use words like Honor Code and Loyalty…you use these words as a punch line.

I may get up and cheer though if you show this.
Many corporations and military organizations use Honor as one of their core values. USMC is Honor, Courage, ans Commitment.
Many people choose to use the words “to honor one another” in their wedding vows. Similarly, we are commanded to “honor” our mother and father. Put an emphasis on the fact that “honor” can be an action as well as a characteristic.
Honor is such a broad topic and there are so many ways to depict and represent it. I totally agree with Sara, that it can be an action and a characteristic. And John, I’ll be cheering with you if Jeremy does show that clip! That’s such a great scene!
Clips:
There’s a cool narration video clip by Amena Brown called “Jesus receives all the honor” (not sure if this has already been used for 3F) http://www.bluefishtv.com/Store/Downloadable_Video_Illustrations/2581/Amena_Brown_Jesus_Receives_All_The_Honor
You may also want to consider taking a look at the movie “Stop Loss” in which decorated Iraq war hero Sgt. Brandon King makes a celebrated return to his small Texas hometown following his tour of duty. He tries to resume the life he left behind. Then, against Brandon’s will, the Army orders him back to duty in Iraq, which upends his world. The conflict tests everything he believes in: the bond of family, the loyalty of friendship, the limits of love and the value of honor.

Film clip from “We Are Marshall” in which Jack (one of the coaches) realizes that it doesn’t matter whether they win or lose, only that they keep playing the game to honor those team members that were lost in the plane crash. http://www.wingclips.com/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16447&substring=honor
Songs:
“In Your Honor” ~ Foo Fighters
I know this isn’t exactly what the song is about at all, and this may be a stretch, but everytime I listen to it I always think of the crucifixion of Christ. Think about it, in the point of view of Jesus, he’s screaming to God and maybe even the people of the world,
“In Your honor, I would die tonight” this would be to God.
“For you to feel alive” this would be to the people.
And where it REALLY fits is the second verse:
“Can you feel me
Feel me breathing
One last breath before I close my eyes
This suffering
For receiving
Deliver me into the other side”
“the other side” as in heaven.
“Vow” ~ Kutless (yes, I know not Kutless, but the lyrics are really fitting)
“Take This Life” ~ Shawn McDonald
“Not Rock Stars” ~ Disciple
“King” ~ Tree63
Quotes:
Show me the man you honor and I will know what kind of man you are. ~ Thomas Carlyle
It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them. ~ Mark Twain
The difference between a moral man and a man of honor is that the latter regrets a discreditable act, even when it has worked and he has not been caught. ~ unknown
The shortest and surest way to live with honor in the world is to be in reality what we would appear to be; all human virtues increase and strengthen themselves by the practice and experience of them. ~ Socrates
You cannot believe in honor until you have achieved it, better keep yourself clean and bright; you are the window through which you must see the world. ~ George Bernard Shaw
No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave. ~ Calvin Coolidge
