#8: The Question of Faith

For years now I’ve been a big fan of Tim Keller. I admire him as a theologian, as a preacher, and as an author. I agree with many that he is the closest thing to a modern day C.S. Lewis that we have today. As is true with just about anybody that I listen to, this does not mean I agree with everything he says. I’m currently reading through his book entitled King’s Cross and he addressed faith in a way that seems to be very common these days…

#9: The Skill of Doubt

“I just read the Bible for what it says.”

Welcome to one of the most annoying statements I hear people say. Why? Because nobody does this.

We all have lenses, called presuppositions, that filter how we process what we read and experience. Think of it like wearing glasses with different types of tint on them. The more objective among us are aware of these lenses and take them into consideration when discerning truth. The subjective among us pretend they don’t exist or that they don’t affect them. Bible Reading Plan for 2012

In 2011 I read through the Chronological Bible reading plan. It is structured by when they think all the events happened and not in the order they appear. This allowed me to get a new sense for how the narrative flows together and proved to be incredibly insightful for me.

For 2012, I want to read the Bible in the order the books were written. This will allow me to get a sense for the development of mankind’s understanding of God and His increased revelation of Himself to us. If you haven’t picked a Bible reading plan for next year I would invite you to try this with me. I will be consulting two resources in doing this.

Faith in the Gospel of John

This post is part of a series on faith in the New Testament.

Here is a look at our forth book in the New Testament filtering through all the examples we see of the word faith. This post will exhaustively look at every example we see in the Gospel of John with a brief commentary on each.

John 12:42-43

“Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God.”

That’s it. One time in the book of John do we find the word faith.

For those of you who have previously read my posts about all of the examples of this word in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, you’ll probably need a moment to wrap your mind around this. John’s gospel includes only one mention–and it is a passage unique to him. What’s going on here?

Hiding Behind the Will of God

“God told me…”

It is tempting to say this phrase as a Christian and there are namely two scenarios when this occurs. The first is when it actually happens. I have clearly heard God tell me (not audibly) to do certain things throughout my life. Some have been small and specific in a moment. Others have been huge decisions I needed to make. Often times these leadings seemed to go beyond logic alone. The second, is when Christians are trying to justify something that they want to do that doesn’t line up with reality–or doesn’t line up to what He is saying to other Christians.

This post will address the second of the two.
