The Blogfather

I just finished reading Blog: Understanding the Information Reformation That’s Changing Your World, by Hugh Hewitt. He is considered by many to be a “blogfather,” a term for a person who inspires others to blog. Although I’ve been blogging for awhile now, I was motivated even more by his book in my blogging aspirations. If you currently blog, or are considering it, then I would highly recommend this to you.

One of the intriguing parallels he makes in the book is the current change that blogging is having in our culture compared with what happened with the invention of the printing press and Martin Luther. Basically, culture is shifting because the control of information is becoming more and more decentralized.

In his conclusion he hits on a point that I want to address:

“The key to keep in mind is that trust drives everything. To build and maintain trust is a tremendously difficult thing, requiring patient attention to detail and discipline over long periods of time.”

And so, if you are reading this, I want to thank you for your trust. I have tried hard to blog about content that would interest most people and would also allow myself an outlet for public reflection as I learn from the community around me as well. It has been fun so far and I hope to keep improving as we go. I am always very appreciative of comments that you all leave. Thanks for reading!

Site updates

I’ve been tweaking a few things on the site and I wanted to let you all know. Didn’t notice anything different you say? Let me explain a few updated sections for your blogging enjoyment.

First, you’ll notice that the sidebar has been cleaned up a bit and now is more obvious and easy for you to subscribe. Look on the right hand column and enter in your email address or click on the light blue box that tells you the number of readers so that you can get automatic updates whenever there is new content on the site. I would recommend this.

Second, I’ve updated the pages at the top of the screen. The “About Me” page now includes other links to things I do online and more up-to-date info about me. I will be updating this more as my family is soon changing. I’m also looking for some better pics for it. The “Reading List” page is always being updated with every book that I read and I recommend that any readers out there check that part frequently; and the podcast page now includes a link that actually works. Sorry about that.

So hopefully this makes things easier to navigate and more efficient for our communication. Happy blogging.

Hooray for 100!

So I just noticed that I have reached 100 comments on my blog and I thought that was worth a small celebration. So put a bright hat on and dance around for a little bit. It’s the small things in life that are the best to enjoy… 200 here we come!

Busy Times

So my wife and I have been in the processing of moving out of our apartment and into a house. Needless to say it’s been a bit chaotic. I’ve still been reading some great books and I’m about to start another interesting one. I’ve been tempted to blog on what I’m reading right now but the parts that interest me are too edgy or controversial to start an online conversation. If you’re interested in some new theological ideas then I would encourage you to read it too. The book is called The Theology of the Dark Side by Nigel Goring Wright.

I just bought a new book that should make for some intriguing conversations. I didn’t buy it new though for as my friend told me, “you never pay full price for heresy.” It should be interesting, stay tuned…

The reason for this site

Welcome to my new blog page! I have long considered doing this and finally got around to it after encouragement from my friend John Chandler. In no way do I consider myself an expert in any of the topics that I will post on. However, I am a strong believer in the value of people discussing life together in the hope of learning from each other…and that is what I hope to create here.

One of the turning points for me was reading John’s page on why to blog. I have included two of the main reasons that he brought up that I hope to accomplish here.

1) to stay in touch

2) to share your thoughts, ideas, or information

Please feel free to comment heavily on any and every thought you have that I discuss here. I’m looking forward to the interaction. Please let me know anything that you would like me to include on here or suggestions that you have.
