The Center of Christianity

I read this recently in Tim Keller’s book King’s Cross. This is fascinating.

In an interview Andrew Walls, a distinguished historian of world Christianity, noted that wherever the other great world religions began, that is still their center today. Islam started in Arabia, at Mecca, and the Middle East is still the center of Islam today. Buddhism started in the Far East, and that’s still the center of Buddhism. So too with Hinduism–it began in India and it is still predominantly an Indian religion. Christianity is the exception; Christianity’s center is always moving, always on a pilgrimage.

Walls hinted that when Christianity is in a place of power and wealth for a long period, the radical message of sin and grace and the cross can become muted or even lost. Then Christianity starts to transmute into a nice, safe religion, one that’s for respectable people who try to be good. And eventually it becomes virtually dormant in those places and the center moves somewhere else.

The Disgust of Holiness

Recently I preached a message at Central called “The Disgust of Holiness,” based on Richard Beck’s book Unclean. This was one of those messages that I could not wait to preach and I was excited to see how much conversation came out of it. I decided to email a link of the video to Richard as I thought he might enjoy seeing how his ideas had morphed into a weekend message. I was surprised when he emailed me back with encouraging feedback. Then, this week he posted the video on his blog called Experimental Theology. This is a phenomenal blog that I have been reading for awhile and I’m in awe of how often he posts and with such incredible depth.

Interview on CBS 5 News

A couple weekends ago we aired a video of a homeless couple that were living out of a storage unit. They had gotten connected with Central and we were able to help them out. Here is a follow-up video to that original story in which I got to be a part of it.

Story Conference Chicago

My last few days were spent in Chicago at the Story Conference. It was the third year of the conference but my first time at it. I brought a few of my crew from the Worship Arts team and we had an absolute blast. It was by far the most creative conference experience I’ve ever had. It also exposed me to a lot of people that I was unaware of prior to this week. A perfect example is my new love for the group Listener.

I blogged about each session of the event (minus the last one since we had to catch a flight) for Clark ProMedia’s blog. Below are links where you can see the highlights from each session.

Does anyone else notice that the @ conference is an epic festival of beards? #story11

What Do You Turn Into?

We had a staff meeting yesterday at Central and one of the conversations was about the things we do that attract people to the church and the things that we do that discourage people from the church. Things like including others, smiling, asking people questions, etc.

As a staff, we naturally concluded that we do the things on the good side more. But then an interesting distinction was made: if we do the right things 9/10 times but do the wrong things 1/10 times, the wrong things will likely overwhelm the good things we did. That means our one bad day or off moment will cancel out those moments when we are at our finest. It was a challenge to not lower our guards and to realize that with a guest to our church we likely don’t get a second chance after a bad experience.
