Competitive Fitness

Competitive FitnessI started going to a gym about a week and a half ago called Competitive Fitness. It is in Chandler and it has a unique approach to helping you get in shape.

Every membership comes with personal training. The gym isn’t filled with a bunch of machines like your typical gym because the idea isn’t that you go in for a bit and work out by yourself. Instead, there is one workout a day that everybody does, and then they write your time or weight on a whiteboard. This creates an awesome community feel to it since everyone is doing the same thing. It is also tremendously encouraging since there is always someone to walk you through the excercises and encourage you along the way. Most workouts can be done in about 15 minutes or less. They use a system called Crossfit (think P90x in shorter time).

So far I feel great and I feel overall much more healthy and strong. If you are looking for something to help you get in shape, definitely check them out.

A Week Unlike Any Other

As many of you know by now, Central finally reached the point where we needed to let some of our staff go as a result of the economy. I’ve never experienced anything like this personally, and I haven’t even met a person in leadership who has. For me, it makes sense logically of what had to be done, but the emotions of it are difficult to push through. I have been so encouraged by the response of our staff through this, both those who had to let people go, and those that found themselves suddenly without a job. I get the sense that God is working powerfully around us in ways that nobody can see. And I am beyond excited that it seems that collectively we all seem to be trusting and relying on Him more. I’ve been able to see a beautiful picture of the Church through this in a time where you’d expect it to go bad. It’s good to know that when the economy tanks, God doesn’t. My prayers go out to our remaining staff and the new challenges we face. My prayers go out to the families of all those who have been affected by the layoffs. I pray that unity continues to prevail.

The Reality of Sleeping

I was reading through one of my issues of Wired Magazine and read an article called “Three Smart Things about Sleeping Late.” If you know me, you’ll have no surprise at why I’d be interested in this. They listed three benefits to staying up late and sleeping in. So, if you are a crazy morning person (aren’t all morning people crazy?) then spend some time processing through the following realities that Daniel Dumas points out in the magazine…

  1. You may need more sleep than you think. (Research by Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders Center found that people who slept eight hours and then claimed they were “well rested” actually performed better and were more alert if they slept another two hours. Until the invention of the lightbulb the average person slumbered 10 hours a night.)
  2. Night owls are more creative. (Artists, writers, and coders typically fire on all cylinders by crashing near dawn and awakening at the crack of noon. In one study, “evening people” almost universally slam-dunked a standardized creativity test. Their early-bird-brethren struggled for passing scores.)
  3. Rising early is stressful. (The stress hormone cortisol peaks in your blood around 7 a.m. So if you get up then, you may experience tension.)

The Monster-Peach

No, this isn’t a post about my love for Roald Dahl’s “James and the Giant Peach.” I’ve come up with an idea that I know is revolutionary…and ahead of its time. I have a vision of a new product that combines two things that I love: Monster energy drinks–and peaches. I’m not sure if this means Monster infused peaches or peach flavored Monsters. I’ll leave that to the more creative people. Anybody with me?
