How I Use My iPad for Public Speaking

I use my iPad when I preach instead of paper notes and I often get asked what software I use.

I was using a program called iAnnotate PDF, but I’ve sinced moved to a program called PDF Expert. I like this one more because it is far more user friendly without sacrificing the features that I need it for.

For anyone who is trying to learn another language (I’m still plugging through Rosetta Stone for Spanish) this could come in handy! Has anyone actually used this?

Top 5 Obvious iPad Tricks (that may not be so obvious)

I’m sure that if you own an iPad you are probably an expert by now with all the tricks to maximize its potential… but here’s a test to see how savvy you really are. This is my list of the top 5 tricks that I have found to be beneficial that are probably obvious to you already (but maybe not). I’ve been surprised in my conversations with other iPadders (I just trademarked that) that they didn’t know at least a few of these on my list. See how many of these you aren’t aware of. Here they are in no particular order:

Pandora

I’ve reached the point, like many others I know, where I’m quite bored of my music collection. As a result, I’ve been listening to Pandora recently and I’ve been quite impressed. Pandora is great because I can play it at home or anywhere where I have internet on my computer. It comes in very handy when you are sitting in Starbucks and trying to drown out the never-ending coffee machine reminder beeps that they have going on behind the counter…

You can listen to up to 40 hours a month for free, but I surprised myself with how quickly I arrived at that. Your options from that point are to pay 99 cents for the rest of the month or pay a year in advance at $3 a month ($36 total). This option allows you to listen with no ads (which were my only complaint from before) in addition to downloading a desktop application and better quality music streaming. I just did that and I’d highly recommend it. For the price you’d pay for about 3 albums on iTunes you can have a year’s worth of unlimited music. This is an incredible way to find new music that you’d like.

Storm Updates

Well, I’ve learned a whole lot about my Blackberry Storm since I last posted about it. For one, I’ve been shown an amazing new website called Data Dude where he gives you free advice and downloads for Verizon phones. Seriously, if you have Verizon you have to check this out! (It is like a free version of Crackberry). You can even email the guy with questions. In addition, I’ve learned two tricks that allow my phone to work far better than it was. So, if you have a Blackberry Storm, here are my two important words of wisdom:

  1. Pull out the battery at least once a week. This will reset the phone completely and will keep it from getting bogged down in anything. Kind of like restarting your computer. (this fixed a problem I was having for over a month)
  2. Hold down the menu key for at least 3 seconds to see a list of programs that you have open. I learned that when you hit the end key to back out of a program, it keeps the program running in the background. This slows down the phone. You need to open the program and hit “close” to actually stop it running. Who knew?

Thanks to my friend Danny for imparting Storm wisdom to me and for the heads up on this stuff. Who knew the older guys could show us younger guys a thing or two about technology?
