You may have noticed that the site looks quite a bit different the last few days. That’s because I’ve totally overhauled it using a new layout (for those of you who are bloggers I’m using the Standard Theme on WordPress). Here are some of the new features you’ll notice:
And the Winner Is…
Thanks to all who entered into my first book giveaway! I had Michelle and Gavin each draw a name and the winners are…
Emily Marney and Katie!
I need each of you to email me your addresses and I’ll send you each an autographed copy of Brett’s book when I get it in the next few days. Thanks to all for playing and for reading this blog!
New and Improved Reading List
I get very excited whenever someone tells me that they used my reading list on my blog to pick a book to read. I obviously love reading and love to be a conduit to connect people with good books.
My sister recently told me that she has been using my reading list but that she wanted a few sentences of my thoughts on each book on the main page where I rate them. This way you can get an overall feel for my yearly reading at a quick glance. I thought it was a good idea so I’ve taken the time to write my thoughts on each one. Thanks to Amy for the idea.
Click the link at the top of the page that says “Reading List of 2010″ and check it out. I hope it’s helpful to you as well.
How Spammers Have Helped My Self Esteem
This post is inspired by a Scott McClellan tweet in which he wrote: “How do you tell a spam blog comment from a real one? Most of the time, the spam comment will be more polite.”
If you don’t manage your own blog, this might not make sense to you. If you do, it is hilariously profound…and true. So I decided to look through some of the spam comments that were left on my blog that my filter caught. Before now, you’d never read these here, and you’d totally miss how much these spammers think of me. Check out a few of their sincere compliments to my creativity and overall impressiveness. Each of these comes with a fantastic link to a website that I won’t include here (nor will I correct the grammar in them).
“Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.”
“Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon.”
“That is pretty intriguing. It gave me some ideas and I’ll be writing them on my website soon. I’m bookmarking your site and I’ll be back. Thank you again!”
“I bookmarked this web page a while ago because of the new content and I have never been disappointed. Continue the outstanding work.”
“Thanks for an interesting article. After looking through different websites I finally found something worth reading.”
“I can see that you are an expert at your field! I am launching a website soon, and your information will be very useful for me.. Thanks for all your help and wishing you all the success.”
“Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.”
Clearly the assumption many spammers have taken is that if they compliment a blogger then he’s sure to approve the comment. Fortunately for me, I have enough honest people around me that it would be a bit tough for me to believe the sincerity of comments like these.
Or maybe I should start spamming comments from people like you and approve only comments like these? Something to think about…
Check out the new look!
You may have noticed that tomorrowsreflection.com looks a bit different these days. With the help of my good friend Mark Miller, of the sansseafood.com fame, I have overhauled the look and function of the site. Here are some new things to notice:
- There is now a sliding feature at the top of the page that highlights different posts. Right now, I have a handful of my Off the Record interviews there in case you missed one. In my opinion, there is a goldmine of thoughts in each person’s responses, so I’d love to keep those on the forefront of the blog.
- You’ll notice that now only snippets of each blog post are shown. This is so I can keep the home page cleaner by not showing full articles, and also so that I can more accurately see which articles people are reading most. To read the full post just click on the title or the “read more” link at the end of the preview.
- My Twitter status updates have moved to the bottom of the page, but you’ll notice that you can still subscribe your email on the right side column as well as see my last 4 books I’ve read.
- Like on Facebook, you can now choose to “like” a post. This is especially beneficial for those of you that are adverse to leaving a comment but like to interact. This feature syncs with your Facebook account. Feel free to use this button aggressively, it’s good for my self-esteem.
So I invite you to look around at the new changes and let me know what you think!
