Introducing…

“A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.” (John 16:21)

And so it is with great pleasure that I can introduce Gavin Mattingly Jernigan into the world. We’ve finally had him home a few days now and our life is getting back into some type of normal. He is a little tanker, born 9 lbs and 8 oz on Tuesday evening at 7:18pm. He has been the most amazing thing I have ever experienced.

Add Your Own Caption

One of the staff members at Central offered to take pregnancy pictures of Michelle a couple weeks back. We thought it would be cool to remember this moment in our lives and so we went to Freestone Park. The pictures turned out amazing. I even managed to get in a few of them like this candid one below. While I’m sure some of the ladies may be saying “Ahh, how cute” (referring to my wife’s stomach) I thought it would be fun to invite you guys to leave your own caption to the picture. So, feel free to leave a line or two at what you think could be happening or what either of us is saying.

Derek Jeter and My Son

Michelle decided to humor an idea I had for our baby room and now we have a life-sized Derek Jeter “Fathead” on our wall. My kid doesn’t even know how good he’s gonna have it. After how nice it looked I then proposed that we could put more of these around our house. That idea hasn’t caught on yet…

Preparation

Well, if you look at the timestamp on this post you’ll see that I’m writing this at 3:29am on Friday morning. I’m getting the sneaking suspicion that God is preparing me for fatherhood. Let me recap my previous nights for you:

Wednesday night / Thursday morning: I wake up at 4:30am to find out that my wife has apparently conclusively determined that her body can’t handle jalepenos while she’s pregnant. I stay up with her in between puking sessions and then take a quick “cat nap” before I have to wake up at 5:30am for Ironman.

Thursday night / Friday morning: My dog Chloe decides that it is playtime at 3:00am by parading around our room in hopes that we’ll get out of bed. When that doesn’t work she resorts to making this high-pitch whining noise which I’m not even sure how she makes. I’ve now determined this to be one of the few noises MORE annoying than my alarm clock. Impressive. When that backfires on her and we lock her in her crate she responds by throwing up inside and outside of it. We then get up and take her out to go to the bathroom because evidently she is on some time schedule that we aren’t keeping up with.

And the encouraging thing about all this? People keep telling me that I have till mid-november to enjoy my sleep. So until then, here’s to preparation.

It’s a Small World After All

I had the weekend off so Michelle and I came up to Flagstaff to get away. It’s been fantastic. We did some Christmas shopping while it snowed today (it wasn’t impressive snow by Flag measures, but when you’re from Mesa). We have been enjoying having nothing to do and being in a much colder environment. Alone time with your wife + partial snow + a good book = RELAXATION.

After some shopping and dinner we decided to spend some quality time at the local Starbucks. A few hours into it Michelle nudges me and is looking at someone who just walked in. And sure enough, there was someone from 3F grabbing a seat. Needless to say we were a bit surprised to see him. Always the extrovert, my wife said his name and a friendly greeting and he looked over at us like we had just asked him to speak Russian. It took him a few moments to place us and then he sheepishly said hi. A bit awkward maybe.

I walked past him a bit later and he invited us to go to church with him in the morning. Much to his surprise, I politely declined. I was even downright honest with him and told him that I wanted to sleep in in the morning. I did feel a bit guilty for it for some reason, and I bet he may be rethinking his view of me from this point on.

But more importantly, this weekend has reminded how much I like wearing a scarf. I’m even wearing it in my room as I type this. How could I have ever forgot about this?
