You Have Too Much

Recently I was reading through Judges chapter 7 and I was reminded of how God often likes to move in our lives. Verse two lays out the situation clearly:
The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ “
If you know the story, God shrinks Gideon’s army from 32,000 men to only 300. It’s pretty obvious who deserves the credit for what happens next. I see God do the same thing today. How many times have we felt His Spirit calling us to do something and we feel that we can’t because we don’t have what we think we need? So we often pray, and ask from others, and plan, and stall like we are a little kid asking for water at bedtime. What if God’s response to our prayers in these moments is that our problem is that we are accumulating too much? Specifically, what if you looked at that thing that God has placed on your heart and trusted Him in ways that terrified you? What if you realized that all that planning and preparation would give you too much to work with (and the danger that you’d give yourself the credit)? When you get to the next chapter in Judges you see that Gideon fully understood what God was doing.
The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.” But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The LORD will rule over you.” (8:22-23)
Translation: You think I did it, but I know God did it. You may have what you need already. Now what is God asking you to do?
